The KhmerPost USA Gala celebration of Asian-American Heritage Month
featured three powerful speeches from

OI

three individuals with impressive credentials.

Massachusetts Attorney General

Maura Healey made her remarks first.
She first thanked the Cambodian community of Lowell in helping her win election
to the office of Attorney General last fall.
She especially thanked the KhmerPost
USA which was the first newspaper in all
of Massachusetts to endorse her candidacy.

Asian (that is all Asian, not just
Cambodians) so he was delighted to be in
the presence of so many Cambodians
here in Lowell and to experience the cultural dances that were part of the Gala
Program. Judge Lim strongly urged all in
attendance to vote in every election, saying that the only way to make the community stronger and better is for everyone
to participate as voters.
The third speaker was U.S. Army
Staff Sergeant VeasnaRoeun, a combat

Galileo Galilei was brought to the
execution site. The moment be he was
executed he made his public apology. He
asked everyone to excuse him for stating
that the Earth orbited the Sun. He said the
Earth actually did not orbit the Sun. His
apology was accepted. He was spared and
freed. When leaving the execution site
Galileo Galilei talked to himself that even
though he apologized the Earth would
always orbit the Sun. The historical fact
that the Earth orbits the Sun is well
remembered by the world, but not Galileo
Galilei's apology.
Likewise recently Mr. Sam Rainsy the leader of the opposition party has
started to silence himself. He has
refrained from criticizing Hun Sen who
has demanded Mr. Sam Rainsy to tell
Mr.KemSokha, the deputy opposition
leader , to tone down his rhetoric and stop
labelling the ruling CPP as "communist"
and him as a Dictator.Mr.Kem Sokha used
to make a threat to build a ladder for Mr.
Hun Sen to use to stand down or for the
opposition to shake if he refused.
Mr. Hun Sen recently responded that
Mr.KemSokha was lucky that he didn't
build that ladder or shake it. If he did, this
time would be the anniversary of
Mr.Sokha's death.Mr. Hun Sen who doesn't wish to be called a communist or die-

tator has publicly threatene4 to kill
Mr.Sokha; On top of that he has admitted
that he holds power and not only ·command the military but also created the military whose m~mbers have killed several
workers, protesters.and his own people.
· Though Mr.Sokha may tone down
his rhetoric, Hun Sen's reputation has
already been badly tainted with bloods
and violence. Average Cambodians and
voters will never fail to remember Hun
Sen as the worst leader.
Why does the CNRP need to silence
itself for Hun Sen?
Sam Rainsy and KemSokha managed to save Cambodians from a foreseeable bloodshed in late 2013 when they
decided not pursuit further mass demonstration against the fraudulent National
Election results. They have proven to be
the great leaders with great conscience
and humanity. They are among the great
leaders of all time including Mahatma
Gandhi. They are unlike Hun Sen who is
good at killing his own people. He is now
among the infamous leaders of all time
including Adolf Hitler, Vladimir Lenin,
Ho Chi Minh and Pol Pot. Hun Sen who
is so hungry for power will them sooner
or later.
The CNRP always values the

Foreign Affairs Minister Hor
N amhong has come under fire from an
opposition lawmaker and villagers in
Thong Khmum province after sending a
letter to National Assembly President
Heng Samrin this week asserting that a
piece of land being farmed by
Cambodians actually belongs to Vietnam.
Mr. N amhong wrote the letter in
response to a request from CNRP lawmakers for the fore~gn minister's intervention following reports from farmers in
Memot district's Choam commune that
three Vietnamese soldiers were among six
Vietnamese nationals who killed their
crops with chemicals on April 19.
While the farmers claim to have been
cultivating the land for decades, Mr.
Namhong said their crops had crossed
over a border marker that was modified as
part of a 2011 memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Cambodia and
Vietnam.
"Recently, in 2015, our citizens

grew crops on 16.6 hectares of land on
Vietnamese soil that caused Vietnam to
react by spraying chemicals on our
farmers' crops," Mr. N amhong wrote in
the letter, dated Monday.
Mr. Namhong's assessment was on
Wednesday refuted by opposition CNRP
lawmaker Mao Monyvann, who said he
visited the area recently, and would consider calling the foreign minister for questioning at the National Assembly.
"I think that Hor Namhong's interpretation is just based on the maps
made in 1982 or 1983 that were nullified by the Paris Peace Agreement [in
1991], as [the maps] were made while
the Vietnamese controlled our country," Mr. Monyvann said.
Ky Tet, who claims he has been farming in the area since 1982, said that he and
about 100 other villagers witnessed the
six Vietnamese destroying their crops and
managed to detain the three soldiers.
"The three Vietnamese carrying

Foreign Minister Says ... ·
three chemical tanks were able to flee,
but we held three Vietnamese authorities
for more than an hour," Mr. Ket said,
adding that local police persuaded the villagers to let the soldiers go after promising
to help settle the matter.
Im Khlauk said his two hectares of com,
bean and rice crops were completely
destroyed.
"Hor Namhong's account, stating
that our land is located on Vietnam's soil,
is like he's stabbing me to death," he said.
"We farmed the land before and after the
fall of the Khmer Rouge."
Provincial police chief Mao Pov said it
was unclear which country the disputed
land belonged to, due to poor border demarcation.
"Between border marker numbers 94
and 95, no temporary border posts have
been installed," he said. "That is why
sometimes Vietnamese farmers also supposedly grow crops on our soil.''

supreme national interests. To that effect
it might have to tone down its rhetoric
because there are more advantages than
the risks. Through the culture of dialogue
political prisoners are freed. Some land
concession contracts are revoked. Some
corrupt government officials are punished. The national assembly proceeds
more smoothly. More government senior
officials are summoned to the assembly to
answer questions put by the opposition
Members of the Assembly. The newly
elected parliamentarians have better
chance in addressing concerns of the protesters who rights have been abused. This
used to be the work of some powerful foreigners to handle it.
The Cambodian People's Party
seems to know that it needs two years or
more to regroup after the National
Election Committee, which used to be
under its control, was dismantled. With
the old NEC, the CPP could manipulate
everything including its dirty tricks to
cheat, evil intention to divide its opponents and vote stealing.
On top of that the CPP might be
thinking about how to hinder the transition of power when it loses the National
Election in the future. The CNRP has a lot
of things to do to make sure the CPP will
recognize the election results. It will also

have to look into how to stop the CPP
from clinging on to power when the CPP
loses the election. Another issue is how to
maintain the CPP's people, who have been
corrupt, to remain in the state apparatus.
The author's view is based on the
cunningness and dirtiness of Hun Sen in
his evil tricks to manipulate every previous election. However, from now on,
Cambodians are no longer intimidated by
the CPP. Hun Sen will be punished by the
people. The closer the election days the
more pressure Hun Sen feels as more people are joining to punish him. Soon the
CPP will be annihilated.
Over the past 40 years the CPP's
younger generations enjoy lavish lifestyle
and better education. Unfortunately they
don't appreciate the people's suffering.
However the CPP is degenerating each
day because the CPP's new generations do
not share the same philosophy as those of
the older CPP's generations. Some CPP's
new generations even feel ashamed of the
cowardice of their senior members. The
CPP's younger generations are feeling
sorry now that their senior members do
not choose to retire and let the young people take the lead.
The 7 January commemoration came
to an end since 2013. There was no longer

For the Royal Oxen, It's Back to Beans and Com ... ijtdm~nmnermmiilJUijtdmtfinnfi~ij

corn," Kong Kan, the Royal Palace's
chief Brahmin priest and astrologer,
announced to the 1,000-strong crowd
via a public address system. "This year,
those crops will yield."
A quick glance over the oxen's preferences over the past five years, however,
might make farmers reconsider swapping
crops on the back of such predictions. In
2014, the oxen chose com and beans,
later nibbling at the rice. The year before
that, they ate com and grass. And 2012,
2011 and 2010 were all com and beari
years.
But with the rice-planting season
underway in some provinces and the rains
soon to fall, attention turned Wednesday
to the country's main staple, with a number of farmers worried about the future
foretold by the oxen.
''Do not be concerned that the oxen
did not eat rice," Mr. Kan said later by
phone, encouraging farmers to look at
the positives. "The oxen ate almost all
the corn and beans, so those crops will
have great yields."
But for Im Sakhoeun, a 59-year-old
farmer in Battambang's Ratanak Mondol
district, com and bean yields mean nothing. On her five hectares of land, she
grows rice.
"I am worried that this year's rice
paddy will be no good because there is
not enough water," she said, going on to

those in 2014.
"Last year, rice paddy grew well
because the rain came at the beginning
and in the middle of the year. But this
year, the rain has not started," she said.
"Also, [this year] the oxen did not eat
rice."
Ms. Sakhoeun said she believed the
astrologer's readings of the oxen's tastes
were spot-on. "I believe the predictions
because it is Khmer tradition. When they
ma~e predictions based on what the oxen
eat, we can see that what they say is what
happens," she said.
Soeung Siem, 39, a farmer in
Kompong Speu province's Samraong
Tong district, was more practical.
"The important things that rice crops
depend on are weather and enough rain,"
he said, adding that he had about five percent confidence in the Royal Plowing
Ceremony's predictions.
Hean Vanhan, a deputy department
director at the Ministry of Agriculture,
was also pragmatic. Reached by telephone, Mr. Vanhan said that despite the
royal oxen's predilection for com and
beans, farmers should use common sense.
The plowing ceremony, he said, "is
part of our faith and tradition.
"If we believe it entirely and give up
sowing our other crops, then there will
be no yield,'' he added.

Based on his recent threat of death '
