During the course of the evening a tray of special rice called motu poya is carried out and placed on the floor beside the platform on which the monks sat chanting. The grains of rice were spread out on a yellow cloth by one of the nuns who instructed the young girls present to remove the broken grains from the pile. Meanwhile, a yellow umbrella is held over them by a layman.
